Tracing the Socioeconomic, the Cultural and the Political in Latin American Postcolonial Theory

It is far from obvious which theories are the most promising ones for the task of critically addressing interdependent inequalities in Latin America as well as global forms of inequality that affect Latin American countries. In this working paper, I look at Latin American postcolonial theories in this respect. Following Nancy Fraser’s analytic distinction of socioeconomic, cultural and political aspects of injustice, and affirmative as well as transformative remedies against them, I undertake a two-sided operation. In a first step, I use Fraser’s framework to shed light on the accounts of inequality that we can gain from the work of Aníbal Quijano, María Lugones and Walter Mignolo. In a second step, I tease out in which ways these accounts transcend and thus challenge the framework used on them

Interrogating Western Modernity: Postcolonial Reflections on Occidental Claims and Action

This paper deals with the way in which European modernity, and the West more generally, are reflected upon in the field of post- and decolonial theories, which generally question those representations of the European/Western tradition of thought and politics that only focus on their positive aspects, but differ greatly with regard to the way in which they frame and formulate their critique of this tradition. I discuss three major positions in this field. Was wir nie über Geschlecht wissen wollten: Potenziale des politologischen Feminismus

Seine transformatorischen Ziele verfolgt der politologische Feminismus mit einem inzwischen umfangreichen und ausdifferenzierten Programm, das unterschiedliche, in der wissenschaftlichen Praxis sich teilweise überlappende Teilprogrammatiken vereint: Erstens deckt der politologische Feminismus geschlechtliche Kodierungen und Asymmetrien auf; Feminismus macht diese Zusammenhänge sichtbar und ist normativ vom Ziel der Geschlechtergerechtigkeit geleitet - wobei dieses Ziel auf ganz unterschiedliche Weisen interpretiert werden kann. Zweitens hat der politologische Feminismus eigene Begriffe und Konzepte hervorgebracht, um den Androzentrismus in politischer Theorie und Praxis bzw. seine Manifestationen und Implikationen angemessen fassen, beschreiben und erklären zu können. Drittens ist das "transsubdisziplinäre" Arbeitsgebiet "Politik und Geschlecht" längst zu einem eigenständigen Diskussionsfeld geworden - und zwar zu einem, das eine besondere Beziehung zu den unterschiedlichen Spielarten feministischer Politik unterhält. Zur Kolonialität der liberalen Demokratie

Eine Krise der liberalen Demokratie wird in letzter Zeit häufig beschworen; ihre Kolonialität wird dabei selten berücksichtigt. Dieser Aufsatz zeigt auf, wie eine solche Berücksichtigung aussehen könnte. Unter Rückgriff auf ausgewählte Positionen der postkolonialen Theorie macht er in einem ersten Schritt die These stark, dass die westliche Demokratie der Neuzeit von Anbeginn durch koloniale Macht- und Herrschaftskonstellationen geprägt war. In einem zweiten Schritt verdeutlicht der Aufsatz, dass selbst westliche Modelle der Demokratie von nicht-westlichen Quellen gespeist sind. Ferner diskutiert er nicht-westliche demokratische Regierungssysteme, die von Maßstäben guter Regierungsführung getragen sind, die westliche Modelle liberaler Demokratie vergleichsweise undemokratisch aussehen lassen. Das Fazit geht der Frage nach den theoretischen und praktischen Implikationen der postkolonialen Demokratiekritik nach.A crisis of liberal democracy has in the last years been frequently invoked; its coloniality is rarely considered. This essay shows how such a consideration might look like. Drawing on select authors in the field of postcolonial theory, the essay first makes the case that Western democracy in the modern era was shaped by colonial constellations of power and domination from the very beginning. In a second step, the essay illustrates that even Western models of democracy are fed by non-Western sources. Further, it discusses non-Western democratic systems of governance that are driven by standards of good governance that make Western models of liberal democracy look comparatively undemocratic. Globale Gouvernementalität: zur Interpretation transnationaler Politik und ihrer Effekte

Die globalisierte Welt ist durch vielfältige Formen transnationaler Politik gekennzeichnet - zu diesen zählt zweifelsohne die NGO-Förderung, vor allem in Ländern des globalen Südens. Der vorliegende Aufsatz befasst sich mit den zivilgesellschaftlichen Effekten derartiger Interaktionen und fragt nach einem geeigneten analytischen Vokabular zu ihrer Deutung. Es wird gezeigt, inwiefern sich Michel Foucaults Studien zur Geschichte der Gouvernementalität dazu eignen, eine Vorstellung "globaler Gouvernementalität" zu entwickeln, die in der Lage ist, die ambivalenten zivilgesellschaftlichen Effekte neuerer Formen transnationaler Politik umgreifend und kritisch zu fassen.The globalized world is characterized by various forms of transnational politics - of particular importance among these is the support of NGOs, especially with regard to countries in the global South. This article addresses the effects of such interactions on civil society and asks for suitable analytical tools to interpret such effects. It shows that Michel Foucault's lectures on the history of governmentality allow us to develop a notion of "global governmentality". This notion enables us to grasp the ambivalent effects of transnational politicson civil society in a broad and critical way
